The airport was closed following the blockage of the runway by a Saudi Arabian cargo plane, which veered
off the runway late on Wednesday.
This development compelled all airlines, local and foreign, operating at the airport, to cancel all flights out of Abuja as aircraft could not land, leaving
several passengers stranded.
A statement issued on Thursday evening by Joe Obi, the Special Assistant to the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, announced the reopening of
the airport.
Obi said the cargo plane has been recovered to the apron.
Obi stated, "The B747 Saudi Air Cargo flight SVA 6814 that veered off the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja last night at
about 22:12 hours local time has been successfully recovered to the apron and the airport reopened for normal flight operations.
