Fifty shades of grey banned in Nigeria cinemas due to sexual content

Nigeria has banned one of the most anticipated movies of the year 'Fifty Shades of Grey' from showing in the country's cinemas.

Olofofounited visited major cinemas around Lagos on Friday, among the cinemas visited are Ozone cinemas in Yaba, Silverbird cinemas in Ikeja, Genesis Deluxe cinemas in Lekki and Filmhouse in Surulere

Speaking with the manager of Filmhouse in Surulere, Mr Izuogo told Olofofounited that an email was sent to all the cinemas in Nigeria by the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB banning the movie from showing in all Nigerian cinemas.


He stated 'It's sad that the culture here will not allow the movie to show, if it was in UK or USA such a thing will never happen, we were asked to take it off despite the fact that it was showing late at night'

Movie lovers who spoke with NE also expressed disappointment about the inability to see the movie, Fifty Shades of Grey. The movie beat all box office competition, and became one of the highest-earning R-rated debuts in cinematic history. By grossing over $8 million in it's opening weekend

The movie has also been banned in Kenya, Zimbabwe, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Indonesia.

The movie, Fifty Shades of Grey started showing in Nigerian cinemas last weekend, but could only last for a week before hitting the , NFVCB hammer

Fifty Shades of Grey, which depicts the relationship between gauche student Anastasia Steele and wealthy businessman Christian Grey, was released worldwide on February 13.

Some critics have objected to the sex scenes and unequal power play in the film and the original book by EL James.
