Most supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan cannot give reasons why he should be reelected on March 28, 2015, a non-governmental organisation, Change Initiative Forum, has said.
The group stated that although the supporters believe that the present administration had performed commendably, 70 per cent of them would not be able to state some of the achievements of the current government.
The Coordinator, CIF, Mr. Genesis Jeremiah, told journalists in Abuja that the development prompted the group to publish a book on the President’s feats while in office.
He said, “Virtually 70 per cent of those fighting for Mr. President to be reelected cannot articulate the reason why he should come back with facts and figures. All they know is that he has done well as President despite the challenges.
“That is why the Change Initiative Forum came up with this idea of detailing his achievements in a book titled ‘Why Goodluck Jonathan should be reelected in 2015.’ This is to provide reasons and facts for these very persons to be able to defend what they are standing for as it relates to the various sectors of the Nigerian economy.”
Jeremiah said the group had taken its campaign across the country, adding that it had “gone to the six geopolitical zones to conduct rallies and we decided to present the book in Abuja being the grand finale of the entire process.”
On some of the achievements, he said the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill was remarkable in that it had given people the freedom to speak up on issues without fear or favour.
Jeremiah said, “The way people insult and embarrass Mr. President has never been recorded in the history of this country and the reason is because he passed the FOI bill.
“Secondly, years back, about 90 per cent of Nigeria’s revenue was from the oil sector. But this has changed because sectors like agriculture and transport are now contributing commendably to the country’s revenue. Yes there are issues but with time they will be addressed.”
A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a member of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Abba Gana, said the book would enlighten Nigerians on the performance of President Jonathan.
“The book is timely because it will enlighten Nigerians so that they can make the best political choice for themselves and for the country. I am sure it will guide Nigerians and will also let people see the performance of the President very clearly,” he said.
