Acne does not only form on your face. It can also form on your back, neck, shoulders, and buttocks just to name a few. Some would think that breaking out on one’s back isn’t a big deal because it can be covered but that does not make the breakouts less stressful. In fact, it could cause even more stress and discomfort because clothes rubbing on the back and other parts of the body can cause irritation, inflammation, and worsen acne. Many refer to acne on someone’s back as bacne.
How Acne Forms
Our bodies normally create oil that surface on our skin. Oil helps keep our skin moist and hydrated, in an effort to balance the pH levels in our skin. Our bodies produce oil, known as sebum, through our sebaceous glands. Sometimes the sebaceous glands can overproduce sebum which in turn can cause our skin to be oily. The excess sebum (oil) and acne-causing bacteria build up in the pores, causing too much pressure on the pore walls which causes them to rupture. When this happens, pimples form and acne spreads quickly because the infected liquid leaks to other areas of the skin.
Back Acne (Bacne)
Just as breakouts form on our faces from an excess of oil and bacteria getting trapped in the pores, it’s the same for other areas of the body like the back. There are many factors that can worsen back acne and they are listed below:
Sweat– Excessive sweating from any type of over-exertion can irritate back acne and cause severe inflammation. After working out, it’s important to shower and cleanse as quickly as possible to avoid sweat getting trapped in the pores. If you can’t shower immediately after working out, at least change into a dry cotton shirt and shorts or pants. Cotton is a breathable material that will allow your skin to be free of ventilation.
Long Hair– If you have long hair and suffer from back acne, this combination could be worsening your skin issue. Oils from the hair can seep onto your back and neck if you commonly wear your hair down, especially if you have normally oily hair to begin with. Keep your hair pulled back if your hair is exposed to the skin on your back during the day, or wear a cotton shirt that covers the back acne if you want to wear your hair down. If your hair gets greasy quickly, cleanse it often as to not irritate and worsen your back acne. Also wear your hair pulled back when you work out and while you are sleeping.
Hormone Imbalance– If you are going through puberty, hormones tend to act crazy during this time and can trigger acne on several areas of your body. Cleanse your skin regularly and wear breathable clothing.
What to Do:
1.) Cleanse Gently and Daily– Gently cleanse your back acne in the shower. Never wash your skin aggressively and if you want to remove dead skin cells, use a soft loofah and GENTLY cleanse the area with a gentle bar soap or natural body wash free of dyes, perfumes, and chemicals.
2.) Salicylic Acid – Try cleansing with a salicylic acid wash in the shower. Salicylic acid is proven to kill acne on all areas of the body if used appropriately.
3.) Wear Breathable Clothing – Certain fabrics of clothing do not allow the skin to breathe so avoid anything made in constricting fabrics. Cotton is the safest bet to allow your pores to have ventilation.
4.) Drink Water – Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and flush out toxins.
5.) Follow a Healthy Diet- Eat tons of fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, nuts, and whole grains.
Home Remedies:
1.) Tea Tree Oil – Dip a cotton ball in tea tree oil and massage over the back acne. It is proven to treat acne due to its antibacterial properties and will not cause inflammation or irritation on most skin types.
2.) Exercise – Exercising allows your body to sweat out toxins that would normally fester in your body and could result in causing your skin to break out. As mentioned above, shower immediately after working out or change into dry clothes until you can shower.
3.) Oatmeal and Honey Mask – Combine raw rolled oats and pure raw honey and apply to your back and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water since cold water seals pores shut, stopping bacteria from getting trapped in your pores. Oatmeal will remove excess oil from the skin while honey is antibacterial and antimicrobial, fighting and treating acne one and for all.
4.) Epsom Salt Bath – Soak in an Epsom salt bath once or twice a week. Epsom salt is proven to treat acne gently and effectively on any area of your body.
